Dr. Cory Papenfuss is a research associate at the Vibrations and Acoustics Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in from Virginia Tech in 2006, M.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001, and B.S. from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in 1998. His Ph.D. work was on "Wideband Active Vibration Control Synthesis and Implementation on Uncertain Resonant Structures," and M.S. on "Control and Instrumentation for Power Management in a Hybrid Electric Vehicle."

During his stay at VAL, he has been involved in numerous projects in both passive and active noise and vibration control applications. Research applications on passive and active noise and vibration control have included aerospace (satellite structures, rocket fairings and commercial aircraft), industrial refrigeration compressors, commercial vacuum pumps, military diesel generators, and prenatal hospital incubators.

In addition to active noise and vibration control work, Dr. Papenfuss has also worked on electromechanical and piezoelectric/PVDF actuator and sensing for practical applications.  He has designed and constructed several distributed vibration absorber, both passive (DVA) and active (DAVA) using PVDF film.  Most recently he has been involved in remote pressure sensing using PVDF wire sensors.

Along with noise control applications, Dr. Papenfuss also includes a variety of custom analog and digital electronics in his research. These include design and fabrication of analog instrumentation signal conditioning, phase-locking polytonal reference generation with galvanic isolation, active filters, and switching power-electronic circuits.

Other interests include hard real-time using PC (RealTime Application Interface for Linux, or RTAI) and embedded computer and DSP hardware. He also manages the 64-CPU  VAL computer cluster used as a resource for rapid numerical modelling and simulation.
